The Trump administration’s latest trade push relies on tariff pressure to coax trading partners into granting American firms wider entry into their markets. Trade Representative Katherine Grainger briefed legislators that the new approach blends parity‑based agreements with selective tariff threats to achieve three goals: revitalize U.S. manufacturing, protect workers, and reduce the trade gap. The policy’s early successes include 19 deals covering about 32 percent of global GDP. In the Indonesia agreement, the Southeast Asian nation listed specific American products that will see lowered tariffs, creating a clear roadmap for trade liberalization. Grainger also highlighted broader trends: U.S. export volumes have surged, while imports are shifting toward capital goods that can be used in domestic factories. Recent concessions from Cambodia, North Macedonia, Malaysia, Jordan, Israel and the EU demonstrate the growing willingness of foreign governments to align with Washington’s tariff‑driven agenda.
