Allies' Defence Spending Targets Scrutinized at Ankara NATO Meeting

At the Ankara NATO summit, U.S. officials will measure progress toward the defence‑budget goals set at last year’s Hague summit. Since then, NATO members have pledged roughly $139 billion in additional defence spending, with about half earmarked for equipment and munitions produced in the United States.

Ambassador Whitaker highlighted that Poland, the Nordic states, and the Baltic nations are leading the effort, while Germany is on track to meet the five‑percent target by 2029. He called for all partners to accelerate spending so the alliance’s financial burden can be equitably shared.

The United States intends to showcase new capability goals that require expanded production on both sides of the Atlantic, reinforcing the alliance’s collective military power.
