Allied Forces Hold Fourth Annual Freedom‑Edge Maneuver

This year's Freedom Edge marks the fourth consecutive annual maneuver, launched in June 2024 and continuing despite the recent scaling back of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise between the United States and South Korea.

The exercise features six Aegis‑equipped destroyers, maritime patrol aircraft, combat jets and aerial refueling tankers. South Korean navy assets include the 7,600‑ton ROKS Yulgok Yi Prime and ROKS Seoe Ryu Siong‑Ryeong. Japan will field its Atago‑class and Asahi‑class destroyers, along with P‑1 aircraft, SH‑60K helicopters and F‑15 fighters.

The United States, while not deploying an aircraft carrier due to commitments in the Middle East, has positioned the Arleigh Burke‑class destroyer USS Bend‑Forth at Busan. Sources say no carrier will join the drill this week, reflecting ongoing tensions with Iran.

South Korea, Japan and the United States aim to demonstrate a robust, stable alliance capable of countering North Korean threats while maintaining regional stability.
