Alberta base fire leaves dozens dead, officials pledge investigation

A massive fire ripped through Canadian Forces Base Vernon in western Alberta on Saturday, resulting in several deaths and numerous injuries, Defence Minister David McGuinty announced. The base lies roughly 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton and was overtaken by flames that accelerated thanks to strong gusts.

Prime Minister Mark Carney posted a message of condolence on social media, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith labeled the tragedy "serious and sorrowful" and commended the rescue teams for their rapid response. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also shared his sympathies and called on the public to respect emergency directives.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact number of casualties or the cause of the fire. The disaster strikes just days before a provincial referendum on secession, heightening concerns across the region.
