Al Alamein Summit Produces Shared Charter Against Unilateral Water Projects

The Al Alamein gathering resulted in a comprehensive charter that condemns any single‑sided actions affecting the Nile basin and the Red Sea. Presidents Abdel Fattah Al‑Sisi (Egypt), Isaias Afwerki (Eritrea), Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia) and Transitional Sovereign Council Chair Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan (Sudan) signed the document after intensive deliberations.

Among the main provisions, the charter calls for strict observance of the 1997 UN Watercourses Convention and other relevant treaties governing trans‑boundary rivers. It warns that any project that reduces downstream water flow or harms existing usage rights will be met with collective diplomatic resistance.

The leaders also voiced opposition to the political recognition of any breakaway regions that could fragment national unity, specifically mentioning the contested status of "Somaliland." They reaffirmed that the management of the Red Sea must remain within the jurisdiction of its coastal states, rejecting foreign interventions that could impair maritime safety or ecological balance.

The joint statement encourages the formation of a permanent inter‑governmental forum to monitor water usage, share scientific data and coordinate emergency response measures, thereby promoting long‑term sustainability and regional harmony.
