Aftershocks continue, authorities set up temporary camps for quake victims

Caracas, July 5 – Following the dual earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24, the nation continues to grapple with a cascade of aftershocks, tallying 942 secondary tremors to date. The seismic activity has claimed 2,954 lives, injured over 16,500 individuals and rendered 16,209 people homeless.

Responding to the humanitarian crisis, officials have established 80 temporary camps across the most affected regions. These sites provide emergency shelter, food distribution points and basic health services to families displaced by the disaster.

Rescue operations remain intensive, with 29,567 personnel—including 3,281 foreign specialists—searching for survivors amid the rubble. The government emphasizes that the temporary settlements will remain operational until permanent housing solutions can be implemented.

Interim President Delsi Rodriguez, who declared a week‑long national mourning period after the initial quakes, reiterated the commitment to ensure safety, aid, and rapid reconstruction for all affected communities.
