Adani, Bhutan’s DGPC Sign Deal for 770 MW Chamkharchu Plant to Boost Regional Clean Energy
Adani Power Limited and Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) signed a binding agreement on Tuesday to construct the 770‑MW Chamkharchu‑1 hydroelectric scheme in central Bhutan. The signing ceremony was attended by Bhutan’s prime minister, key cabinet members and senior representatives from both companies.
The Chamkharchu project is the second flagship hydro partnership after the 570‑MW Wangchu project agreed in September 2025. Both initiatives fall under the broader 5‑GW hydropower development framework outlined in the May 2025 memorandum of understanding between Adani Group and DGPC.
Set on the Chamkharchu River in Jhamgang district, the plant will be delivered through a Build‑Own‑Operate‑Transfer (BOOT) arrangement, with an equity structure of 49% Adani Power and 51% DGPC. The concession will span 30 years, calculated from the commercial operation date (COD).
Management statements underscored the project’s role in strengthening Bhutan’s winter power supply and creating an exportable surplus of renewable electricity for India during the hotter months. The venture is also projected to deliver substantial carbon‑intensity reductions and contribute to the shared sustainability agenda of the two neighbours.
Construction activities are expected to commence in the first half of 2027, with a target to achieve commercial operation within six years of breaking ground.
