30 Fatalities as Conakry’s Largest Landfill Gives Way

In Conakry, the capital of Guinea, a gigantic pile of garbage collapsed on Sunday night following heavy rain, killing 30 people. The incident occurred at the city’s biggest dumping point, where a sudden shift of waste created a ground‑failure that swallowed several nearby huts.

Six individuals were reported in critical condition. Rescue crews continue to search the area for any survivors, while authorities assess the damage to surrounding homes, many of which were completely destroyed.

The landfill, managed by a military engineering unit, was slated for closure, and residents had previously received notices to leave the vicinity. Nonetheless, a significant number of people were present at the time of the collapse.

Government representatives assured that displaced families will be moved to safer locations and that steps will be taken to improve waste‑management practices across the nation.
