International panel flags 2026 Bangladesh measles crisis as preventable tragedy

A recent report by the Global Centre for Democratic Governance (GCDG) labelled the 2026 measles outbreak in Bangladesh as a "preventable tragedy" and one of the gravest health crises of the decade. The analysis attributes the surge to a combination of vaccine supply interruptions, cancelled supplementary immunisation activities, and delays in procurement during the interim government of 2024‑2025.

The report notes that Bangladesh, which previously sourced WHO‑approved measles‑rubella vaccines through UNICEF’s open‑tender system, faced chronic shortages after switching procurement methods. UNICEF sent multiple warning letters between 2024 and 2026, yet the gaps persisted, leading to a drop in vaccination coverage to 56.2% in 2025 – the lowest level since 2017.

The GCDG warned that weakened child immunity due to these gaps was a primary driver of the 2026 explosion of cases.
