In a horrific early-morning crash, a truck laden with iron rods and carrying dozens of passengers overturned in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila, claiming at least 15 lives. The accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. near the eastern end of the Jamuna Bridge, close to Sartail Southpara on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. Witnesses say the truck was heading north for Eid when the driver appeared to doze off, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. Many of those traveling were seated on top of the metal rods, leaving them vulnerable when the truck rolled over. Rescue operations faced challenges due to the weight of the cargo and the remote location. Highway traffic came to a standstill until authorities cleared the wreckage. This latest tragedy echoes previous Eid-related road mishaps in Bangladesh, where poor safety enforcement and overloaded vehicles have repeatedly led to mass casualties. Officials have vowed to probe the incident thoroughly.
