For the first time, the Union Ministry of Power has drafted rules for the rights of power consumers of different regions of the country. Power consumers are the most important stakeholders in the power sector. It is because of them that this region exists.

Providing electricity to all citizens of the country and focusing on consumer satisfaction is important. For this, it is essential to identify key services, set minimum service levels and standards in relation to these services and recognize them as consumers’ rights.

A draft of the Electricity Consumers’ Rights Rules, 2020 has been prepared for the first time by the government. The Ministry of Power has invited suggestions, ideas, comments from consumers by 30 September 2020. The Ministry issued this draft in this regard on 9 September 2020. They will be finalized keeping in mind all the upcoming suggestions and proposals.

Electricity consumers will get the first 10 rights, including the State Electricity Regulatory Commission to determine the average number of consumers per year for electricity distribution companies discoms and the outage period under service reliability. Timely and Simplified Procedure for Connection: Only two documents for electrical connections up to 10 kW load and no estimated demand charges for load up to 150 kW to speed up the connection.
