World Bank upbeat on India, lifts growth estimate to 7.1% for FY27

In its latest South Asia Economic Update, the World Bank raised its projection for India's fiscal year 2026‑27 GDP growth to 7.1 percent, up from 6.6 percent. The revision reflects confidence in the country's expanding domestic market, a rebound in industrial output and a services sector that continues to gain strength.

The bank noted that even with persistent global uncertainties, India's growth path remains solid thanks to a series of structural reforms. The unification of labour codes, GST simplification, tariff rationalisation, enhancements to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and sizeable investments in both physical and digital infrastructure have together fortified the economy's growth engine.

While challenges linger in agriculture, the overall macroeconomic picture is robust. Households' spending continues to drive activity, which the World Bank describes as the single largest source of momentum for the Indian economy.

The institution also highlighted risk factors that could affect the outlook. High energy prices and possible adverse weather patterns associated with El Niño may pose challenges to growth and inflation control in the coming months.

On a broader scale, the World Bank lifted its 2026 growth estimate for South Asia to 6.9 percent from 6.3 percent, attributing the boost primarily to India's strong performance. Conversely, the growth estimate for the rest of the region was revised down to 3.6 percent from 4.1 percent, mainly due to a sharp downgrade for Bangladesh.

The report underscores that South Asia's heavy reliance on oil imports makes it vulnerable to price fluctuations, and that El Niño‑related climatic stress could threaten agricultural productivity, a vital livelihood for a large portion of the population.
