UPI Transaction Value Grows to 314 Lakh Crore Rupees, IMF Praises System

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognised India’s Unified Payments Interface as the world’s largest real‑time payment system by transaction volume. By the end of FY 2025‑26, UPI’s share of global real‑time payment transactions was close to 49 %, underscoring its international significance. Domestically, the platform’s total transaction value surged to 314 lakh crore rupees in the 2025‑26 financial year, a jump from merely 0.07 lakh crore in FY 2016‑17 – an increase of nearly 4,000‑fold.

The Ministry of Finance stated that the system’s reliability, scale, and interoperability have earned worldwide acknowledgment. While person‑to‑merchant (P2M) transactions made up 63 % of all transaction counts, person‑to‑person (P2P) payments contributed 71 % of the total value, highlighting the diverse usage patterns across consumers and businesses.

Such growth signals a broader shift towards digital finance in India, delivering greater financial inclusion, reducing cash dependency, and positioning the country as a leader in payment innovation on the global stage.
