Unlock Hidden Debit Card Insurance Benefits Before They Expire
Banks in India frequently bundle a free personal accident insurance plan with debit cards, yet many cardholders never learn about it. The policy can protect against death, permanent total disability, and in certain cases, air‑travel mishaps, with sums ranging from ₹50,000 to several lakh rupees.
The exact amount hinges on the card’s category. Platinum and other premium cards often feature a ₹2 lakh cover or higher, while basic cards may only provide a modest benefit. However, the insurance only becomes effective if the card is active – typically a transaction must be recorded within the last 30 to 90 days before an accident.
Key banks illustrate the scope of the benefit. SBI offers a cover that can stretch from ₹2 lakhs up to ₹5 million for most of its debit cards, though exclusions apply to Visa, Mastercard Global, Classic and virtual cards. HDFC Bank supplies a personal accidental death cover and, for Platinum card users, an air‑accident protection of up to ₹3 crore on international tickets.
When a covered tragedy occurs, the nominee must lodge a claim promptly, usually within a month, and provide a death certificate, post‑mortem findings, police report, recent bank statements, and KYC details of the nominee. Each bank’s specific timeline and document checklist may differ, making early verification crucial.
Financial experts warn that families often miss out on these payouts simply because they were never informed. Cardholders should request the exact coverage amount from their bank, understand the activation and claim requirements, and share this information with their loved ones to ensure the benefit is not lost.
