The department also clarified the purpose of each return form for non‑audit taxpayers. ITR‑3 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) earning income from business or profession who are not eligible for the simplified ITR‑4.

ITR‑4, popularly known as the ‘Sugam’ return, serves resident individuals, HUFs and firms that opt for a presumptive taxation scheme, excluding LLPs. ITR‑5 is applicable to firms, Limited Liability Partnerships, Associations of Persons and certain other entities, while ITR‑7 is filed by persons and institutions required to submit returns under specific provisions of the Income Tax Act.

Choosing the correct form ensures smooth processing and helps avoid additional compliance burdens.
