Uber's AI strategy triggers fresh layoffs in support division
Uber Technologies announced a ten‑percent reduction in its customer‑service workforce, citing the need to realign its support operations with an expanding artificial‑intelligence strategy. The layoffs affect the Community Operations unit that provides rider and driver assistance. As part of Uber’s return‑to‑office push, remote staff have been asked to shift to centrally located hubs. The company’s internal memo said the current, scattered structure hindered the adoption of next‑generation AI capabilities. This is the first time Uber has explicitly tied job cuts to its AI agenda. The firm previously cut roughly 23 percent of roles in its People division in June, impacting less than one percent of its 34,000‑employee base. Hiring continues for over 500 openings, especially engineering positions linked to autonomous mobility and robotaxi programmes.
