Two‑wheelers lead surge as EV share reaches 13% in September

September 2026 set a new benchmark for India’s electric vehicle sector as total retail sales climbed to 333,634 units, a 74 percent jump from September 2025. The surge propelled overall EV penetration to roughly 13 percent, highlighting accelerating consumer acceptance.

Electric two‑wheelers dominated the growth curve, delivering 207,314 units – an 88.67 percent rise compared with the same month last year and a 13.16 percent increase over August. Their share of the two‑wheel segment rose to 11.6 percent, up from 8.2 percent a year earlier.

Electric passenger vehicles also posted impressive numbers, with 36,108 units sold, representing a 94.56 percent YoY increase and a 17.63 percent monthly gain, raising their market share to 8.5 percent. Three‑wheelers recorded 86,024 units, a 40 percent annual surge and a 7.74 percent month‑on‑month rise, achieving a 64.9 percent penetration. Commercial EVs saw 4,188 units sold; despite a slight dip from August, annual sales surged 158 percent, lifting their share to nearly 4 percent.

FADA chief Sai Giridhar attributed the momentum to festive‑season buying, lower operating expenses, an expanding model portfolio, and government incentives such as the PM e‑Drive scheme and state‑level subsidies, which have shifted EVs from a subsidy‑driven niche to a demand‑driven market.
