Telecom Act 2023 imposes ₹50 lakh fine for fraudulent SIM issues

Under the provisions of the Telecom Act, 2023, the misuse of telecom identifiers—including SIM cards, International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, and other subscriber data—is classified as a serious offence. The DOT emphasized that any breach can lead to a fine of up to INR 50 lakh in addition to a possible three‑year jail term. The department’s advisory also highlights growing concerns over cybercrime, digital fraud, and the manipulation of IMEI numbers across the country.
