South Korea Considers Holding Google Accountable for Sensitive Data Exposure

The Gender, Family and Youth Ministry in South Korea announced that it is evaluating the possibility of taking legal action against Google after a data leak revealed personal and governmental details. The review focuses on the role of Google's infrastructure in the incident and whether any negligence can be established under Korean law.

This development aligns with the country's intensified push against online sexual exploitation. Officials highlighted that deleted material often migrates to new domains, making enforcement challenging.

According to ministry data, 2025 recorded 17,629 digital sexual crime cases—a 4.7% increase over the previous year. During the same period, authorities removed more than 1.5 million offending sexual media files and provided assistance to over 53,000 victims.

Authorities stress that tackling cyber‑offenders alone will not curb the problem; holding technology providers responsible for the platforms that disseminate illicit content is equally critical. If the ministry proceeds, a case against Google could mark a significant shift in how South Korea enforces tech accountability.

The ongoing inquiry aims to map the leak's full impact, identify the leaked information types, and assign clear liability.
