Solar and Wind Drive India to 530 GW Clean Power Target

Solar photovoltaic systems are set to dominate India’s expanding power grid, with projections indicating that renewables will reach 530 gigawatts by 2030. This forecast comes from the India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026, recently unveiled at the India Renewable Energy Summit in New Delhi by the International Energy Agency.

The report details a spectacular ten-year surge in clean energy infrastructure, which has multiplied nearly four times and officially eclipsed 300 gigawatts in 2026. As a result, India has climbed to become the second-largest manufacturer of solar modules and the second-fastest growing renewable market worldwide.

A major administrative breakthrough occurred in 2025, when the country successfully secured 50 percent of its total installed electricity generation from non-fossil sources, accomplishing the goal half a decade earlier than planned. This accelerated transition is already delivering measurable economic and strategic rewards.

According to IEA calculations, diverting demand away from imported fossil fuels has generated savings exceeding $100 billion on coal and natural gas between 2011 and 2025. These financial gains are expected to double by 2030. The agency also highlighted that maintaining current deployment rates is critical; without the solar, wind, and bioenergy projects initiated since 2010, national coal imports would have ballooned by an extra 110 million tons in 2025.

Going forward, solar PV installations are projected to constitute more than 80 percent of all newly added grid capacity, reinforcing the nation’s decarbonization roadmap. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, noted that these renewable gains offer substantial energy security benefits, particularly as global markets face heightened uncertainty.

He observed that India’s consistent regulatory approach successfully reduces power costs, attracts global capital, and serves as an instructive example for other developing nations. Speaking at the event, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi remarked that the nation’s rise as a prominent green energy power underscores the exceptional progress achieved in recent years.
