PM‑Surya Ghar scheme powers over 5.1 million homes with rooftop solar

Launched in February 2024 with a budget of ₹75,021 crore, the PM‑Surya Ghar programme aims to provide free electricity to one crore households through rooftop solar.

As of 12 August 2026, 5.158 million homes have benefited, receiving rooftop installations that together amount to 14.8 GW of solar capacity.

Beneficiaries have been transferred subsidies worth approximately ₹28,024 crore, and about 1.9 million of these families now enjoy a zero‑bill electricity connection.

The scheme demonstrates how targeted subsidies can accelerate rooftop solar adoption while delivering tangible cost savings to low‑income households.
