In a proud announcement, Union Minister Piyush Goyal celebrated India’s record-breaking 1.43 lakh patent filings in FY 2025-26, calling it proof that the country’s innovation drive is irreversible. This 30.2% year-on-year leap from 1,10,375 applications showcases a maturing IP landscape.
Domestic filers owned the show, accounting for more than 69% of submissions at 98,771, a sharp rise from 68,201 last year. Posting on X, Goyal noted how this growth mirrors India’s ascent as a global innovation leader.
State-wise, Tamil Nadu topped with 22,995 filings, with Karnataka and Maharashtra trailing. Education’s impact shone bright—academic institutions filed 36.5% of applications, highlighting collaborative efforts between academia and industry.
‘India’s innovation engine is not going to stop!’ Goyal proclaimed. Globally, India now ranks sixth among patent applicants, according to WIPO. Eight straight years of increases, including a 146% surge since FY21’s 58,503, underline the ecosystem’s strength.
Contributions from startups, MSMEs, and R&D organizations have been instrumental. This trajectory positions India for exponential growth in tech, pharma, and beyond, as government reforms simplify filing and boost awareness. Goyal’s remarks inspire confidence in a self-reliant innovation future.
