New NLP Analysis of Young Talk Shows Early Warning Signs of Mental Illness
A longitudinal research project at a renowned institution has integrated natural‑language‑processing (NLP) tools into its ongoing study of youth mental health. Over several years, more than 200 children between nine and thirteen years old shared personal stories of stressors while researchers recorded the sessions. When the recordings were examined by four distinct NLP models, the systems could predict with notable precision which kids would report depressive or anxious symptoms six years later. The analysis highlighted that the presence of certain discourse markers—tiny linking words—was a stronger indicator than the specific stressful events mentioned, reshaping how clinicians might assess risk in the future.
