Nitin Gadkari Announces 15% Iso-Butanol in Diesel Pilot Tests

New Delhi, July 4 – Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed that the government is finalising regulations to permit a 15 percent iso‑butanol blend in diesel. He described the blend as a practical and efficient replacement for traditional diesel, capable of curbing the nation's heavy dependence on crude oil imports.

During the launch of the inaugural flex‑fuel passenger vehicle, the petroleum minister highlighted that direct ethanol‑diesel mixing is technically unviable, prompting a shift toward iso‑butanol production from ethanol feedstock.

Pilot projects involving construction equipment and farm tractors have already validated the blend's operational stability and emission benefits. Additionally, two generator units powered entirely by ethanol and iso‑butanol were commissioned, demonstrating engine compatibility.

The iso‑butanol blending scheme is integrated into a comprehensive plan that accelerates the adoption of ethanol, sustainable aviation fuel, bio‑CNG, methanol, biodiesel, LNG, hydrogen and electric mobility, reinforcing India's goal of energy independence.
