India and South Korea have launched a fresh phase of negotiations to upgrade their decade-old trade pact, creating specialised sub-groups on digital commerce and supply-chain resilience. The decision was formalised during bilateral meetings held in the capital this week. Officials confirmed that the sub-groups will focus on rules governing cross-border data flows, e-commerce facilitation and joint measures to secure critical supply lines. The initiative aligns with the joint statement issued during the South Korean President’s April visit, which called for a “future-oriented” economic relationship. Negotiators also examined existing provisions on goods and services trade, investment protection and phytosanitary norms. They noted the growing trade deficit and pledged to recalibrate tariff lines and non-tariff barriers to achieve more balanced outcomes. Both governments reiterated their commitment to finishing the upgraded agreement within an agreed timeframe. The renewed dialogue is expected to open new avenues for Indian IT firms and Korean manufacturers while reinforcing strategic cooperation in semiconductors, green hydrogen and electric vehicles. Analysts view the move as a clear signal that both countries want deeper, tech-driven economic integration.
