New AI‑Based Traffic Control Initiative Launched to Ease Delhi Congestion

Delhi’s traffic woes are set to receive a high‑tech boost after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a Rs 1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on Wednesday. The AI‑based solution targets faster vehicle movement, fewer accidents and better urban mobility by deploying cutting‑edge traffic‑control tools across the city. A total of 42 traffic corridors have been earmarked for the programme, which will be executed in three phases over a span of 24 months. The system will combine live traffic monitoring, adaptive signal sequencing, automated enforcement cameras and an integrated command‑and‑control centre to optimise road usage. Delhi’s roadways currently bear the load of about 7.1 million active registered cars, a surge that has outstripped the expansion of road infrastructure and left traffic regulation reliant on static signal cycles. The adaptive traffic control will automatically tweak green‑light durations in response to real‑time flow, creating green corridors that give priority to ambulances and other emergency fleets. With AI‑driven analytics, the platform will automatically flag red‑light violations, overspeeding, wrong‑way driving, illegal parking, non‑compliance with helmet or seat‑belt rules, and phone usage while driving. It will also help identify black‑listed, repeat‑offending, and hit‑and‑run vehicles. Variable message sign boards and digital apps will broadcast live updates on congestion, diversions and parking availability, while navigation‑service providers will receive the same data to guide motorists. The initiative is part of a larger Centre‑Delhi collaboration aimed at modernising the city’s transport ecosystem and easing chronic traffic congestion.
