New AI and Machine Learning Programs Target 24,000 ITI Students

The Tamil Nadu administration has set a strategic goal to integrate AI and Machine Learning training into its network of government Industrial Training Institutes. Under the five‑year modernisation plan, fifty ITIs will introduce AI‑ML as a separate trade, with an allocated budget of ₹10 crore for the 2026‑27 financial cycle. By admitting roughly 24,000 learners across the rollout period, the state hopes to create a pipeline of technology‑savvy workers for the evolving economy.

Every year, ten institutes will commence the programme, allowing gradual scaling and adaptation. The curriculum, prepared by the Directorate of Employment and Training, combines theory with hands‑on lab work, focusing on applications that are already transforming sectors such as manufacturing automation, health‑care diagnostics, fintech, and digital education.

Infrastructure assessments are in progress to identify the first batch of institutes capable of hosting AI‑ML labs. Factors such as existing equipment, qualified teaching staff and proximity to AI‑oriented industries will guide the selection. The government also plans to forge partnerships with tech companies and manufacturing giants to co‑design modules, provide industry‑standard hardware, and facilitate internships.

These collaborations are expected to deliver practical exposure, guidance from seasoned professionals, and opportunities for students to work on live projects. In parallel, the state will finalize admission policies, course duration, faculty development programmes and certification standards before the inaugural cohort starts, ensuring a robust and industry‑relevant skill ecosystem.
