Research Highlights How Mosquitoes Pick Their Favorite People

In a recent investigation by Florida International University, scientists explored how three prominent mosquito vectors identify their preferred human hosts. The study recruited 119 volunteers and measured the volatile chemicals and microbial signatures emitted from their skin.

The three species—Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus—are responsible for transmitting dengue, Zika, yellow fever and West Nile virus. By placing each mosquito species in a controlled environment with the volunteers, the researchers observed distinct attraction patterns.

Aedes aegypti showed a clear inclination toward participants who produced lower concentrations of certain volatiles and who avoided applying scented personal care products. This species also displayed a slight male preference and was most active in daylight.

Aedes albopictus, known as the Asian tiger mosquito, gravitated toward individuals emitting particular ketones and horticultural‑like odors. Its daytime activity mirrored that of A. aegypti.

Culex quinquefasciatus, a night‑biting mosquito, relied heavily on the skin microbiome. The presence of specific bacterial families on the skin heightened its attraction, while other microbial profiles discouraged landing.

The authors suggest that the nuanced chemistry of human scent, combined with the microbial ecosystem on our skin, could be leveraged to develop repellents or attractants that disrupt the transmission cycle of mosquito‑borne diseases.
