Modi and Albanese Announce Nuclear Agreement at Annual Leaders Summit

During the Annual Leaders Summit in Melbourne, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese formally announced a nuclear‑energy agreement between their countries.

The statement underlined that the deal marks a significant milestone in the nuclear sector, unlocking a reliable source of Australian uranium for India’s civilian reactors.

Both leaders noted that the arrangement complies fully with the 2015 Australia‑India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement and will operate under the strict oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

They also raised concerns about the volatile situation in West Asia and its possible effects on global energy supplies, reiterating a joint commitment to transparent, rule‑based trade.

The agreement complements existing cooperation on liquefied natural gas, with Australia continuing its LNG exports to India, while India expands its supply of liquid fuels and downstream petroleum products to Australia.

By strengthening strategic ties, the two democracies aim to fast‑track renewable‑energy projects, promote low‑carbon fuels and attract greater private and public investment across the energy value chain.
