Mobile Labs to Patrol Markets as FSSAI Targets Adulterated Dairy and Oils
NEW DELHI — To provide on‑the‑spot testing capability during the peak festive period, the FSSAI has instructed states to deploy Food Safety on Wheels (FSW) mobile laboratory units at major marketplaces, fairgrounds and high‑traffic vending zones.
These vans are equipped with rapid test kits for detecting adulterants in milk, ghee, edible oils, confectionery and soft drinks. Technicians can deliver results within minutes, enabling immediate removal of suspect batches from shelves.
The authority highlighted that mobile labs not only speed up detection but also serve an educational role, allowing inspectors to demonstrate proper testing methods to vendors and raise awareness among shoppers.
Each deployed unit must maintain a digital log of samples collected, test outcomes, and follow‑up actions. The data will be streamed live to the national FOSECOS platform, ensuring transparent monitoring and facilitating coordinated responses across state borders.
FSSAI officials expect that the visible presence of these labs will deter potential adulterators and reinforce consumer trust in the safety of festive food purchases.
