Maruti Suzuki’s 1 MWh BES supports solar power, boosts grid stability
On July 8, Maruti Suzuki India unveiled a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System at its Kharkhoda manufacturing hub in Haryana. The BESS is linked directly to the plant’s power‑distribution network, acting as a pilot that stores excess solar electricity generated by a 20‑MW solar plant commissioned in 2025.
By retaining surplus solar output for later use, the storage system enhances the plant’s renewable energy consumption and reinforces the stability of the local electricity grid. The technology is expected to function for about 15 years, delivering an annual reduction of approximately 54 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the project marks a significant step toward an autonomous green‑energy ecosystem in India. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to cutting Scope‑1 and Scope‑2 emissions as production expands, in line with Suzuki Motor Corporation’s target of a 42 % emissions drop by FY 2030‑31 compared with FY 2023.
