ISRO Chairman Highlights Growth of Indian Space Startup Ecosystem

During the National Space Day event in Ahmedabad, ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan announced that the country’s space sector now supports approximately 440 startups. The rapid expansion signals a broader opening of the industry to private investment, moving away from the era when government agencies held exclusive control.

The chairman cited key achievements: Chandrayaan‑1’s detection of water molecules on the Moon, the cutting‑edge camera system on Chandrayaan‑2, and the successful soft‑landing of Chandrayaan‑3 near the lunar south pole on August 23, 2023. These missions illustrate the evolution of India’s space programme from its 1962 origins to a service‑oriented platform.

He also outlined future initiatives, including the crewed Gaganyaan mission and the Indian Space Station, whose first module has already been approved with a 2035 target. The event, organized by ISRO’s Space Applications Centre, highlighted career pathways in space science, the need to broaden the domestic space ecosystem, and the role of international cooperation.
