IRCTC’s upgraded portal to support 150k bookings per minute
On July 15, IRCTC will unveil a modernised ticket‑booking website designed to handle more than 150,000 reservations each minute, eclipsing the current 32,000‑per‑minute limit. The launch follows feedback from students who reported glitches on the old portal, prompting the railway ministry to act. Along with the booking engine, the Passenger Reservation System will be upgraded to manage upwards of 4 million enquiries per minute, a ten‑fold increase over the existing capacity. The platform introduces several traveller‑centric tools: seat‑preference selection, a fare‑calendar for comparing ticket prices across dates, and support for multiple Indian languages. Dedicated booking windows for differently‑abled passengers, students and patients are now integrated into one seamless flow. The user interface has been simplified, removing excessive pop‑ups, flashing graphics and repetitive CAPTCHAs, thereby accelerating the tatkal booking process. Finally, a consolidated view will show seat availability for sleeper, AC‑3 tier and AC‑2 tier classes on a single screen, making it easier for users to pick the best option.
