IRCTC’s new ticketing site enters beta testing phase

New Delhi, 15 July – In a move to upgrade India’s rail ticketing experience, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has opened the beta version of its newly designed booking website. The Ministry of Railways announced that this is the first major redesign since the portal’s inception two decades ago.

The beta version runs parallel to the existing site and can be accessed through a distinct link placed on the home page. Passengers are encouraged to try the new system, make reservations and share their observations, which will shape the final version scheduled for release in the next few weeks.

The redesign project drew heavily on input from students of Malaviya National Institute of Technology, who presented usability ideas to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Several of those recommendations have been woven into the new interface.

Since 2002, the IRCTC portal has facilitated an average of 14.5 lakh ticket bookings per day. The updated portal offers a clutter‑free design, smoother navigation and a more straightforward booking workflow. It removes superfluous captchas, pop‑ups and flashy graphics, and consolidates seat‑availability information for all travel classes onto one screen.

The number of checkout steps has been reduced, and saved passenger profiles are now automatically populated for frequent users, speeding up repeat bookings. The beta launch is primarily a feedback‑gathering exercise; subsequent improvements will be made based on user input. The platform will eventually be integrated with the modernised Passenger Reservation System, with a full rollout expected shortly.
