Qualcomm and Tata Electronics are teaming up to manufacture cutting-edge automotive modules in Assam, marking a pivotal step in India’s quest for self-reliance in semiconductors.
Announced on February 20 from New Delhi, the partnership will see production at Tata’s state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad. This move supports ‘Make in India’ by bringing automotive tech production home, focusing on digital cockpits, infotainment, connectivity, and smart vehicle systems.
Domestic manufacturing will meet the growing needs of vehicle makers while making supply chains more robust and adaptable. As part of Qualcomm’s international manufacturing ecosystem, Tata Electronics will help fulfill global demand for modular automotive solutions.
These modules pack Snapdragon Digital Chassis SoCs with key system elements into pre-built units, offering automakers full electronics ecosystems. The design promotes faster development cycles and ready-to-use architectures, propelling the shift to software-defined vehicles.
Industry leaders voiced strong support. Nakul Duggal from Qualcomm noted the necessity of scaling production amid the industry’s pivot to modular designs. Savi Soin of Qualcomm India added that integrated solutions streamline design processes and hasten vehicle launches, with Indian production enhancing supply chain agility for worldwide OEMs.
Central to this is the Jagiroad plant—a $3 billion investment in India’s inaugural outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility. Featuring advanced tech like wire bonding, flip chip, and ISP, it targets high-demand areas such as automotive, IoT, communications, and AI, heralding a new era for Indian tech manufacturing.
