Indian IT Secretary Highlights Global AI Rules Study
New Delhi – Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan told reporters that India is closely monitoring the evolving regulatory approaches to artificial intelligence being adopted by the United States, the European Union and other international bodies. The purpose is to build a balanced Indian AI framework that aligns security requirements with the nation’s innovation agenda.
World‑wide, AI systems are growing more sophisticated, and policymakers are debating how to regulate powerful models without slowing advancement. In response, India is expanding its AI ecosystem through the IndiaAI Mission, reinforcing public computing infrastructure and promoting domestic AI research and development.
During a conversation with NDTV Profit, Krishnan said that a consensus is forming globally: AI cannot be left entirely unregulated. He noted the United States, previously the most vocal opponent of AI governance, now imposes restrictions on access to frontier AI models.
India is undertaking a detailed assessment of AI governance mechanisms used by various countries and regions to craft a practical, balanced, and forward‑looking regulatory regime. The framework will include essential safety safeguards and clear guidance for AI platforms while ensuring that the rules do not hinder research, startups, or innovative ventures.
The secretary admitted that creating legislation for AI is not straightforward because of the technology’s rapid evolution. Laws must keep pace with innovation, a delicate equilibrium that will take time to perfect.
India is actively participating in global discussions on AI governance, engaging with the EU, the US‑driven PAX SILICA coalition and other forums. Topics under negotiation include AI infrastructure, access to computational resources, and responsible AI development.
The government has already clarified that India will not merely copy the EU’s AI Act nor adopt the early, lighter US model. Instead, policy makers are working on an indigenous framework that addresses the potential hazards of advanced AI while offering enough flexibility for startups, research institutions, and innovation‑centric enterprises.
