Indian Air Force to Receive 160 Smart Anti‑Airfield Weapons by 2029

A fresh procurement worth ₹810.79 crore has been cleared by the Ministry of Defence for Bharat Dynamics Limited to supply the Indian Air Force with 160 Smart Anti‑Airfield Glide Bombs (SAT‑SAW) and related accessories.

The agreement, classified under the “Buy Indian‑Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured” (IDDM) initiative, was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The SAT‑SAW is a satellite‑guided precision glide bomb deployable from Jaguar, Hawk and Sukhoi‑30 MKI aircraft. Its primary role is to neutralise enemy air‑field infrastructure—runways, taxiways, bunkers, hangars, radar sites, fuel depots and communication nodes—from a distance that keeps IAF aircraft clear of anti‑aircraft fire.

Developed wholly in India by DRDO, the weapon system integrates around 60 percent indigenous material. Key subsystems such as the Initial Measurement Unit, Long‑Impact Delay fuze and Twin‑Store Carrier have also been indigenously produced, reinforcing the nation’s defence self‑sufficiency.

Planned deliveries during FY 2027‑28 and FY 2028‑29 will markedly improve the IAF’s stand‑off strike capability, ensuring seamless air operations in any future conflict.
