India's steel exports surge 26.2% to 3.55 Mt, earnings rise 28.9%

Export figures released for the April‑September period of FY 2026‑27 show that India’s steel shipments jumped 26.2 percent, reaching 35.5 lakh tonnes (approximately 3.55 million tonnes) compared with 28.1 lakh tonnes a year earlier. The export boom translated into export earnings of ₹28,263.7 crore, marking a 28.9 percent increase over the ₹21,931.5 crore recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

The surge in volume and value reflects the growing competitiveness of Indian steel in global markets, aided by cost‑effective production and improved quality standards. Trade analysts attribute part of the growth to strong demand from Southeast Asian and African buyers, as well as favorable foreign exchange conditions that have enhanced the price advantage of Indian exports.
