Despite a surge in internet subscriptions across India, the gap between city and countryside remains pronounced. By March 2026, the nation recorded 109.3 crore internet subscriptions, yet rural penetration stands at just 48.31 per 100 inhabitants, far behind the urban figure of 126.80.

Musk pointed out that satellite‑based connectivity could bypass the costly infrastructure required for towers and fibre, offering a quick and scalable solution for places still waiting for government‑led projects. He urged policymakers to fast‑track spectrum allocation and other clearances so that Starlink can begin offering its services to the millions still offline.
