India Prepares for BRICS Summit with Focus on Digital Currency Integration

As India gears up to host the BRICS summit in September 2026, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra emphasized the importance of linking central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) with fast‑payment networks across the bloc. The proposed integration seeks to make cross‑border payments faster, cheaper and more reliable.

The BRICS grouping—Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa—has identified seamless international payments as a strategic priority. In a recent address, Malhotra highlighted the potential to cut transaction costs and improve settlement efficiency by connecting each nation’s payment infrastructure.

Several pathways are being examined, from employing CBDCs as a settlement layer to establishing direct links between existing fast‑payment systems. While still under discussion, the RBI sees a clear opportunity to lower fees for member economies.

India’s broader agenda includes promoting the rupee’s international role. Bilateral local‑currency trade arrangements have already been forged with Indonesia, the Maldives, Mauritius and the United Arab Emirates, aiming to reduce dollar dependence.

The governor also urged Indian banks to embrace artificial intelligence as a catalyst for growth, recommending the creation of board‑approved AI governance policies and comprehensive model inventories.

On the macro‑economic front, Malhotra acknowledged that geopolitical tensions in West Asia could pose short‑term risks, but stressed that diversification of energy sources, ethanol blending, electric‑vehicle promotion and free‑trade agreements will reinforce India’s economic foundation in the years ahead.
