Regulatory reforms and digital trust key to India’s 5G growth
A new analysis released on Tuesday forecasts that 62 percent of Indians will have a 5G connection by 2030, well above the 50‑percent average for the Asia‑Pacific region. The report points to regulatory modernization as a cornerstone for sustaining mobile‑industry health and accelerating the digital economy.
India is listed together with Bangladesh, Indonesia and Pakistan as "leading nations" where policy updates are essential to keep pace with rapid mobile‑technology evolution.
The connectivity challenge has shifted from mere network reach to actual adoption. South Asia’s coverage disparity has dropped from about 30 percent to less than 5 percent, bringing issues such as service cost, device availability, digital skills, consumer confidence and online security to the fore.
Mobile technology and related services are expected to boost the Asia‑Pacific economy by $1.4 trillion by 2030, a 40 percent increase over the current $1 trillion contribution.
The next growth wave will be determined by how governments, operators and tech providers address four critical areas: fast‑track AI expansion, rebuilding digital trust, strengthening digital infrastructure, and nurturing digital sovereignty.
India’s measures – including the BharatNet broadband expansion and the PM‑GDISHA initiative that has delivered basic digital‑skill training to more than 64 million rural citizens – are cited as concrete steps toward these goals.
Digital trust is rising as an economic priority. Projected spending on information security is set to climb 11.7 percent in 2026, reflecting expanding needs for cybersecurity, identity verification, privacy protection and related services.
The country’s Digital Personal Data Protection Rules are designed to create a trustworthy environment for storing and processing sensitive data. At the same time, there is a growing push for sovereign‑cloud environments that can host auditable and secure AI workloads.
India also features among the few nations that have published a 6G spectrum roadmap, underscoring a long‑term perspective on connectivity and spectrum planning.
