Import Ban Drives Self‑Reliance in India's UAV Sector
In addition to the Drone Rules and the PLI framework, the Indian government imposed strict restrictions on the import of certain drone components. Smit Shah explained that the import curbs forced local players to innovate and develop indigenous alternatives.
The prohibition on high‑value parts such as advanced flight controllers and proprietary software compelled Indian startups and established manufacturers to invest in research and build in‑house capabilities. This shift accelerated the creation of a home‑grown supply chain, fostering technical self‑reliance.
Shah noted that the policy trio—regulatory reform, financial incentives, and import restrictions—has collectively built a comprehensive ecosystem. Companies now benefit from a supportive policy environment, access to funding, and a protected market that encourages domestic R&D.
The outcome, according to Shah, is a more resilient UAV industry that can compete globally, create skilled jobs, and contribute to India's broader strategic objectives in aerospace and defense.
