Hybrid Skills in Demand as Indian IT Workforce Grows to 6 Million

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology disclosed that by March 2026 the Indian IT industry's employee base reached six million, bolstered by the creation of roughly 135,000 fresh positions during the fiscal year.

Although AI‑driven automation threatens certain entry‑level functions, the sector is witnessing a surge in demand for professionals who blend technical expertise with commercial insight. Roles tied to emerging technologies such as cloud‑native development, data analytics, and AI integration are expanding rapidly.

NASSCOM pointed out that workforce realignment stems mainly from changing business models and economic cycles rather than a systemic decline in technology jobs. According to a recent IADP Research survey, India ranks third globally and first in the Asia‑Pacific for employee‑perceived job security, with about 30 % of respondents feeling safe in their positions.

The survey also highlighted that job‑security perception varies by occupation: 37 % for knowledge‑based work, 18 % for skilled trades, and 17 % for repetitive tasks. A complementary study concluded that generative AI is reshaping job functions, enhancing productivity, and increasing the need for hybrid skill sets across the IT landscape.
