Earlier this year, the government released the India AI Governance Guidelines, a set of principles that put people at the centre of AI development. The guidelines identify misleading information, deepfakes, algorithmic bias and potential social harms as key risks.
They also recommend reviewing legal gaps, accountability mechanisms, data protection, copyright issues, content authentication and the misuse of generative AI. Institutional bodies such as an AI Governance Group, a Technology and Policy Expert Committee, and an AI Safety Institute have been proposed to oversee implementation.
