A small, cube-shaped instrument aboard NASA’s Curiosity rover is quietly rewriting what we know about Martian geology. Since landing, the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer has studied 1,761 rock and soil targets, returning nearly 4,000 chemical analyses to waiting scientists on Earth. The device works by firing alpha particles and X-rays at surface materials; the atoms respond by emitting characteristic X-rays that reveal exactly which elements are present, down to trace amounts. Quick scans take only ten minutes, while full analyses require two to three hours. One recent highlight came when the rover crushed a rock and exposed brilliant sulfur crystals—evidence that could help explain how water once flowed across the now-arid world. Because APXS draws power from a nuclear generator, it keeps working through dust storms and long nights, giving mission teams an uninterrupted record of Mars’ changing surface chemistry. Canadian space officials have pledged continued support through 2029, ensuring the instrument will keep sending vital data for years to come.
