Refunds jump 68% as net GST reaches ₹1.68 lakh crore

August 2026 saw a notable rise in GST refunds, which surged 67.9 percent year‑over‑year to ¡ 31,795 crore. This increase contributed to the overall net GST collection of ¡ 1,68,057 crore, up 8.3 percent from ¡ 1,55,181 crore in August 2025.

The surge in refunds reflects higher processing volumes and possibly greater compliance among taxpayers seeking reimbursements. Despite the refund jump, total GST receipts continued to grow, driven largely by a 29 percent rise in taxes on imports, which alone added ¡ 62,604 crore to the treasury.

Domestic GST revenue rose 9.3 percent to ¡ 1,37,249 crore, while the net domestic GST after refunds increased modestly by 3.4 percent to ¡ 1,18,759 crore.

The fiscal authorities will examine the refund dynamics and overall collection trends at the 57th GST Council meeting set for 12 September 2026 in New Delhi. Topics on the agenda may include further automation of GST processes and reforms to streamline the refund mechanism.
