Green and Specialty Steel Goals Added to India's 2047 Vision

India’s upcoming National Steel Policy will incorporate dedicated targets for green steel, specialty steel and stainless steel as part of the broader "Developed India 2047" framework. Drafts indicate that the government seeks to set production milestones for these segments by 2035 and again by 2047.

The green steel component is aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the metal‑making process through the adoption of newer, low‑carbon technologies and the use of renewable energy sources. Specialty and stainless steel goals are intended to boost the sector’s export potential and meet the evolving needs of automotive, defense and infrastructure markets.

Steel Secretary Sandeep Paudrik highlighted that the policy will also introduce trade‑defence tools such as safeguard duties and anti‑dumping measures to protect domestic producers from unfairly priced imports. These steps are expected to create a more favourable environment for Indian steel makers.

The draft further emphasises support for small and medium‑scale manufacturers, promising assistance in technology transfer, cost optimisation and market access.

Statistical releases this year placed crude steel capacity at about 222 MT, with a target of 300 MT by 2030 under the current policy. Finished steel output grew to 54.3 MT in the latest quarter, while exports surged 35 % to 2.29 million tonnes, underscoring the sector’s expanding global footprint.
