Gold Hits Record Highs as Market Flocks to Safe Havens

December futures for gold and silver delivered sharp gains on Wednesday, overturning recent downward pressure. The rally was fueled by a confluence of factors, including a depreciating greenback, softer US bond yields, easing crude oil costs, and lingering geopolitical tensions. Electoral uncertainty in the United States further accelerated the shift toward defensive assets, with Democratic gains in congressional races triggering widespread reassessments of global market risks.

Domestic benchmarks surged significantly. MCX gold added ₹3,088 to climb 2.21 percent, reaching an intraday maximum of ₹1,42,540 per 10 grams. Market activity settled near ₹1,42,300. Silver demonstrated even fiercer buying pressure, jumping 3.84 percent by ₹6,902 to top ₹1,86,600 per kilogram, with live prices hovering around ₹1,86,373.

Global markets echoed this bullish trajectory. COMEX gold climbed 2.32 percent to $4,031.90 per ounce, while silver surged 4.10 percent to $51.795 per ounce. The weakening dollar index and declining Treasury yields have systematically enhanced the appeal of precious metals, which typically perform strongly when financing costs drop and inflation fears moderate.

Crude oil price corrections have already provided some relief from inflationary anxiety, opening the door for potential monetary policy relaxation by central banks worldwide. Simultaneously, geopolitical factors remain a primary catalyst. Russia’s recent openness to trilateral peace talks concerning Ukraine and the United States, contrasted with persistent diplomatic ambiguities involving Iran and Washington, has kept investors cautious and reliant on gold as a portfolio hedge.

Technical analysis points to a resistance barrier near ₹1.41 lakh for MCX gold, with the next major supply zone spanning ₹1,43,000 to ₹1,43,700. Bullish momentum faces initial support at ₹1,40,000, while a secondary floor sits between ₹1,37,500 and ₹1,38,300. Despite the rally, oscillator readings like the RSI hovering near 35 and bearish histogram signals indicate that structural strength has yet to fully confirm.

Silver’s technical setup shows immediate resistance between ₹1,86,000 and ₹1,88,000. Breaking this ceiling could trigger an upward move toward the ₹1,94,000–₹1,96,000 sector. Downside risk is contained between ₹1,78,000 and ₹1,80,000, with the next safety net positioned at ₹1,70,000–₹1,72,000. Traders are advised to track upcoming Federal Reserve rate policy statements, US dollar performance, and international political developments to gauge near-term trends.
