Fiscal year 2025-26 adds 1.87 million rooftop systems, boosting capacity by 6.7 GW

During the financial year 2025-26, the PM Surya Ghar scheme recorded the installation of 1,871,000 new rooftop solar systems. This surge added an extra 6.7 gigawatts of solar generation capacity, reinforcing India’s commitment to renewable energy.

The augmentation in capacity translated into tangible benefits for 2,271,000 families who reported lower electricity expenses after their solar panels became operational. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy highlighted that the rapid uptake was driven by the scheme’s simplicity—applications are submitted via a dedicated national portal, and installations are executed under a demand‑driven framework.

The data also reveal that more than 1.89 million beneficiaries, many from agrarian regions, experienced a zero‑billing period, reflecting the direct financial impact of solar adoption on household budgets.

Analysts point to this growth as a key factor in meeting the International Energy Agency’s projection that solar will meet about half of India’s additional electricity demand by 2030, alongside wind, hydro, and nuclear sources.
