Essar Group Backs 300 MW Green Energy Deal to Boost 5 GW Portfolio
In a major move for India’s clean energy sector, Essar Power has inked a power purchase agreement with NTPC Limited for a 300 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project in Andhra Pradesh. The development involves a substantial capital outlay of around ₹4,500 crore.
The project will utilize a sophisticated energy mix featuring solar panels, wind turbines, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). By integrating these technologies, the plant will supply stable, grid-compliant electricity that matches peak demand periods.
Corporate leadership viewed the deal as a critical component of long-term growth. Shrinivasan Vaidyanathan, Essar Group’s Operating Partner-Infrastucture, remarked that ensuring a dependable and eco-friendly power supply is essential for national progress. He added that Essar’s seasoned management team and tech-driven approach will help drive India’s upcoming energy evolution.
Ankur Kumar, Chief Executive Officer at Essar Power, described the collaboration as a benchmark achievement. He noted that the company’s aggressive expansion in solar, wind, and battery storage domains will receive a significant boost from this NTPC partnership.
The initiative reflects Essar Power’s comprehensive strategy to build a roughly 5 GW diversified energy portfolio. This framework will strategically balance renewable generation with conventional thermal and gas-based power assets.
NTPC Limited, a flagship Navratna company under the Union Ministry of Power, has traditionally led India’s hydroelectric development. The utility has recently pivoted toward wind and solar sectors, steadily building its renewable capabilities.
Rising power consumption in India’s commercial hubs has intensified the need for robust energy security. Essar Power emphasized that blending multiple generation sources is key to improving grid resilience and supporting a low-emission future.
The project also aligns with the government’s ambitious 2030 goal of reaching 500 GW of renewable capacity. By committing major funds to dispatchable green power, Essar Power aims to stimulate further private investment in India’s sustainability drive.
